While most everyone else back home was awaiting the arrival of night sky to gaze at the Northern Lights, the Guatemala team was in a state of hard doze after nearly 24 hours of continouous travel by plane and bus to our first night’s destination, the Hotel California in Huehuetenango.
We rose early again this morning to continue our journey, up steep and curvy roads over a high mountain pass in Sierra Madre, stopping along the way for delicious coffee and hot chocolate at a place called Coffee in the Heavens, then winding our way through several villages and small cities until we reached the Mission House in Barillas in mid-afternoon.
Mimi, Emelda and Elena served us a fine lunch then it was time for stove assembly training in the Aller Skills Center out back where the stoves are manufactured. On Sunday after church we will pack up and head for Los Limas, the village where we will stay through Thursday morning.
It’s a long way to get to Barillas, but time goes by quickly as we chat and enjoy the scenery before us. So far, so good, and thankfully uneventful. We are all a little road weary but anxious to begin our work in the villages.
Below are a few photos from the trip so far. I am also including a few photos of the incredible effort to get one of the water tanks we purchased for the village of Moxon up the trail.
Hasta la Vista for now,
Brian
P.S. You may have heard about the 6.0 earthquake that rocked Central America Sunday morning. Pretty mild in our location, although it did wake me up! As far as I can tell there is no damage here.

What a wonderful, yet tiring start to a truly humanitarian expedition. You are all in my heart today.
Such a wonderful young man to carry that heavy tank up for his village.
Glad all are safe from the quake.
Wonderful photo. Looking forward to coming behind your group. djm
